Stories - AI Story Generator

The Idea

I wanted to create personalized bedtime stories for my kids where they were the heroes. Traditional stories are static—the same narrative every time. With AI, I could generate unique stories customized to their interests, with images that brought the narrative to life.

Building It

Stories combines two AI capabilities: text generation for the narrative and image generation for key moments. You describe what you want—characters, themes, tone, length—and the AI creates a complete story with accompanying illustrations.

The platform runs on Cloudflare’s edge infrastructure. Workers AI handles both text and image generation at the edge, D1 stores the created stories, and everything happens with low latency globally. The freemium model (limited free stories, unlimited with subscription) keeps infrastructure costs sustainable.

What People Use It For

Parents create bedtime stories where their kids are the main characters. Friends generate hilarious scenarios for entertainment. Writers use it for creative inspiration and brainstorming. The 7,000+ stories created show incredible variety—adventure tales, educational narratives, fantasy epics, comedic scenarios.

The combination of text and images creates a richer experience than either alone. Kids engage more when they can see themselves in the illustrations. The stories feel more immersive and memorable.

Technical Challenges

AI cost management was critical. Image generation is expensive, so I only generate images for key story moments, use caching for similar prompts, and require subscriptions for heavy usage.

Content safety required careful prompt engineering, content filtering on inputs, and post-generation moderation to ensure everything stays appropriate.

Performance meant progressive loading—show the text first while images generate in the background, so users aren’t waiting for everything at once.

AI democratizes creativity. Anyone can create compelling content now, not just skilled writers or artists.

Personalization drives engagement. Users love seeing themselves or loved ones in stories. That personal connection transforms generic content into meaningful experiences.
